Queen Lili’uokalani Canoe Races

The University Sport and Recreation team travelled to Kona, Hawai’i with the students from the Faculty of Engineering for the 50th annual Queen Lili’uokalani Canoe Races.

As the only University team at the event, travelling to the world’s largest waka ama race for the first time since 2019, the students were proud to be both cultural ambassadors and keen competitors for New Zealand and the University. Their team kapa haka performance the night before the competition kicked off was met with a standing ovation.

The team completed the 29km race in 2hrs 55 minutes and placed an impressive 6th place in the Iron Mixed race against some strong teams. The students showed how determination and dedication can compete on the world stage.
