Peace Week

Established in 2021, the University of Auckland’s annual Peace Week is a coordinated approach with acts of service and charity to honour the lives lost in the tragic 2019 Christchurch Mosque attacks. It is an initiative to spread love and peace. During Peace Week, students are invited to learn about different cultures, ethnicities and faiths in order to build a more socially cohesive society.

This year’s Peace Week theme was “To Know One Another – Unity in Diversity”.

The opening session of Peace Week, on Monday 13 March, included a discussion with the following distinguished panellists.

  •      Professor Cathy Stinear, Pro Vice-Chancellor, Equity
  •      Professor Tracey McIntosh, Professor in Te Wānanga o Waipapa | School of Māori and Pacific Studies
  •      Bilal Naser, Intern psychologist and doctoral candidate

In addition, the Muslim Students’ Association led a charity drive. A bake sale was held in front of the City Campus library to raise funds for local communities.

It was heartwarming to see the diversity of the people who participated in the various events across the week, and very encouraging to see the increasing number of attendees each year.

This year’s participants shared how happy they were to attend Peace Week events through the University. Peace Week will resume next year, stay tuned on social media to join.
