New openings
This year we’ve welcomed several new and exciting campus additions, and we trust you’ve enjoyed them too! From new spots to stock up on much-needed snacks to a new residence – let’s recap what’s new to campus.
Snackster
Carlaw Park Student Village residents found the answer to their day-long cravings with the opening of Snackster in Semester One. Offering a coffee bar, grab-and-go meals from sandwiches to sushi, grocery and household essentials as well as a wide range of snacks, City Campus’ newest retailer is now open seven days a week.
If you haven’t already, be sure to stop by and check it out.
Esports Arena
The Esports Arena officially opened its doors in 2023 in the Kate Edger Information Commons building on campus and has quickly become a student hub for Esports enthusiasts, social gamers and newbies. The Arena is now home for our Esports club and every Friday hosts weekly events. This has quickly become an inviting space for students to unwind and socialise. FIFA tournaments, Women in Gaming days and inter-faculty and inter-residential competitions are held regularly in the Arena and it has helped create a growing community at the University.
Go flatting with Ngā Wharenoho | Accommodation at Carlaw Park – Stuart McCutcheon House
As kainoho | residents settled into their new home, the property underwent its own transformation. Following the passing of former University Vice-Chancellor Stuart McCutcheon, the residence was officially named Carlaw Park – Stuart McCutcheon House to commemorate McCutcheon’s enduring legacy and contributions to the University and Ngā Wharenoho | Accommodation.
In June the name was formally announced at the Property Industry Awards where Carlaw Park – Stuart McCutcheon House was nominated for multiple awards. It was a moment of pride and honour when Stuart McCutcheon House won the Best in Category award for the Multi-Residential Property Award.
Among the distinguished guests who graced the occasion were Deputy Vice-Chancellor Adrienne Cleland and Deborah McCutcheon, both of whom played pivotal roles in making this endeavour a resounding success.

New prayer space open on City Campus
In Semester Two the Muslim staff and student community opened the long-awaited new Muslim Prayer Space on City Campus. This space allows staff and students to perform Salah | prayers, one of the five pillars of Islam. To contribute to their spiritual, mental and emotional wellbeing, Muslims often perform Salah five times daily.
The new space also allows staff and students to come for reflection and reset when the stresses of student life or work become overwhelming.
It has separate prayer spaces and wudu | ablution areas for men and women, as well as an office for the Muslim Chaplain.
Wiki Whai Hauora 2023
Each semester the Student Wellbeing team host Wiki Whai Hauora, a week where we encourage students to pursue health and support their physical and mental wellbeing.
